Background
From his PRRD biography (self-reported): more than 35 years in Fort St. John and more than ten in Charlie Lake; worked ten years for BC Rail; "continues to work as a self-employed carpenter."[1]
Electoral history
- First elected in November 2014.[1]
- 2022: led Suzanne Haab 233 to 232 on election night, then trailed 231 to 234 on recount. The B.C. Supreme Court declared the election invalid in November 2022 after ineligible voters were found; Sperling said he "agrees with the court decision."[4][5]
- February 2023 by-election: won 264 to 254.
- 2026: acclaimed.[6]
Board record
- Board chair November 2020 to November 2022, November 2023 to November 2024, and since November 2025.[7][8][2]
- Moved in July 2025 to give Area C half of the Site C grant-in-lieu of taxes from 2027, for aquatic-plant harvesting and potable water. Defeated.[9][10]
- On wind farms (December 2025): "there's roughly 300 wind turbines in B.C., 192 of them are in the Peace [region], so now with the six [projects] we've got proposed, there's another 200 to 250, so what are we getting out of it?"[11]
- On a possible Site E dam (August 2026): "We give a lot to this province, and it always seems to be on our back."[12]
- Backed the September 2026 limits on electronic attendance: "We all have alternates to be in this room as much as possible."[13]
Promises and delivery
His 2023 by-election bio lists his experience and makes no specific promise; its only forward-looking line is "Dedication is non stop to move our area and region forward."[14] No platform was found in by-election coverage. When he became chair in November 2025, CJDC-TV reported his priorities as health care and public safety.[2] Since then he voted for a $151,209 top-up for 911 radio coverage (February 2026).[15] Three months before, in August 2025, he seconded ending the PRRD's four nursing and health-care scholarships and moved dissolving the scholarship committee "until such time as the Regional Board resolves a strategic focus"; no replacement was found.[16] He moved the Area C water-service bylaw now on the ballot.[17]

Facts. The board's most senior leader by chair terms, returned by acclamation after a court-voided 2022 race that turned on voter eligibility, not on anything he did. The board's most outspoken voice on wind farms, Site E and Site C benefits.
