Came to Dawson Creek at age 11, "over 20 years" ago. Over 15 years in customer service, with managerial retail roles in the last two to five years (employer not named). Director of the Dawson Creek Speed Skating Club 2021-23 and vice-president since 2023 (the club site lists no executive, so this is unverified). Volunteers with The Ark Christian Youth Centre, his church, Networks Ministries and the Canadian Cancer Society. "As someone who has been in the low-income threshold, I know what it's like to struggle and feel unrepresented." Does not drive; a daily BC Transit user. Competed at the 2012 Canadian long-track speed skating championships. His campaign page has about 169 followers.
Unverified, surname only John van Spronsen is founder and director of The Ark Child and Youth Centre; Rudy Van Spronsen is a Chamber airport-marketing representative and business owner.

- July 2020. Letter on transit cuts (service went from 31 to 13 hours a week), proposing Saturday and midday service.
- October 2021. Publicly challenged Mayor Bumstead and council to ride the bus for a month.[3][4]
- November 2021. Email requesting more service; council denied it with a written point-by-point rebuttal.
- November 30, 2022. Letter to the new council: "We'll also remember this is a group of privileged, non-low income, non-disabled, non-senior group of people making decisions for the city... We won't stop advocating until we are successful." Received for information with Dober and Sudnik opposed.[5]
- June 2023. After he met the mayor and CAO, council directed staff to pursue a $50,000 federal Transit Solutions planning grant and sent him a thank-you letter. The CAO called him "a long standing advocate and champion for transit in Dawson Creek [with] an excellent understanding and good ideas." This is his one concrete policy win.[6]
- 2023 to 2025. Letters on bus-stop benches and pads (August 2023) and long-distance bus options (October 2025). A November 2025 "Save BC Transit" email to council, the MLA and the MP after Councillor Parslow floated cancelling BC Transit. To CJDC-TV: "I use it to get to and from work, run errands, visit friends, for volunteering opportunities within the community."[7]
- February 1, 2026. Letter and petition of nearly 500 signatures opposing transit elimination, proposing Saturday service, closing the midday gap and a Pouce Coupe loop. Received for information.[8]

Facts. The most persistent citizen advocate before this council on any single issue over six years, with one measurable win and a 500-signature petition. Finished last in 2022. His 2026 campaign is broader and more organized than in 2022.
Our reading (inference, not fact). Strong lived-experience credibility on transit, low-income and disability issues; thin on finance, infrastructure and water. His 2022 "privileged... group of people" letter is a potential friction point with incumbents Kaempf and Sudnik (Sudnik voted against even receiving it).
Questions worth asking. How would he pay for expanded transit within the budget? His view on the water project.
